UMBC is fortunate to have a strong and active analytics community where faculty, staff and even students can meet to share ideas, research and results about the use of “actionable intelligence” in the work and life of the university. Opportunities to engage include the following:
- Report Exchange (REX) Developers Meeting (every Thursday from noon to 3 p.m.)
- Report Exchange (REX) Users Group Meeting (every other Friday at noon)
- “Analytics @ UMBC” presentation & discussion (~monthly on Fridays at noon)
- Speaker Series
The campus analytics community is supported by DoIT’s Analytics and Instructional Technology groups, as well as Institutional Research, Analysis & Decision Support (IRADS).
Mini Grants
To encourage, identify and exchange effective practice in the use of learning analytics, DoIT supports an annual “mini-grant” initiative especially designed to address the following:
- Questions surrounding student success and retention through graduation, especially those that explore relationships between activities and learning in one course and outcomes in other courses.
- Proposals from instructors of courses that have low success rates, are critical progression points for students, or that impart fundamental skills required for success in the major or program.
The Basics
- $2k award, renewable annually.
- Report at the conclusion of the project (conference proposals, external grant submissions, or article submissions are good substitutes)
- Participation in Learning Science Community meetings
- Recipients are encouraged to use their results to compete for a Hrabowski Innovation Fund award.
How to Apply
Submit the following by the last day of each Fall or Spring term (next round deadline: Friday, May 21, 2021)
- A brief abstract that could be published on this site if accepted.
- Max: 3-page research project proposal
- Brief nominating letter from department chair
